A representative from the Philadelphia Police Department informed fox news Digital said the arrest warrants were issued for two 16-year-old boys. Fox News Digital has chosen to withhold their identities because they are minors and have not been formally charged.
Billy Schmidt suspect: What we know about the tragic killing
Billy Schmidt, 22, was shot during an attempted armed robbery around 1:30 a.m. on June 6, when police found the Penn State student with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m.
The teens have not yet been arrested.
Billy Schmidt suspect: Incident captured on surveillance video
In surveillance footage, Schmidt can be heard asking, “Give me your phone,” and gunshots are heard shortly after. In the video, one man abandons his cell phone and then another man runs away from the corner with Schmidt chasing him, who is then shot in the chest.
Law enforcement authorities described the shooter as a black male, approximately 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall, wearing dark clothing and a light gray camouflage mask. Authorities said the man was armed with a handgun.
Police said the second suspect is 5 feet 8 inches tall, has braided hair, and was wearing a light gray custom hooded sweatshirt from the brand “KONFUSED.” The front of the sweatshirt features three skulls and crossbones, with a gemstone halo above each skull.
Additionally, the U.S. Marshals Service is involved in the search for the teens and is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to their capture.
Billy Schmidt’s father and sister speak out
The victim’s father, Bill Schmidt, told ABC7 his son was returning home from a bar where he was watching the NBA Finals with friends.
“He was a really nice guy, cared about everybody, never hurt or bothered anybody, never bothered anybody, and it was a travesty for him to get shot like this,” Bill Schmidt said. “When they stole his phone and he chased them, I was shocked.”
Billy’s sister, Anna Schmidt, told reporters she did not believe anyone would take her brother’s life.
“I miss him so much and I don’t understand how someone could do this,” Anna Schmidt said.
Schmidt is attending Penn State World Campus pursuing a degree in journalism and is expected to graduate in December.
