Who is John Wallace-Bey?

John Wallace-Bey, 23, of New Castle, Del., has been working as a community technical intern at ChristianaCare, the health system that operates Wilmington Hospital, since February 2026, according to his LinkedIn profile.

His work involves repairing malfunctioning technology throughout the building, According to CBS News.

Sources confirmed nbc philadelphia Wallace-Bey had been fired from the hospital earlier the day before the shooting.

He had no previous legal issues, according to court documents. His neighbor, John Richardson, described him as a loner.

“I’m shocked when you talk about something that happened in my neighborhood, literally next door,” Richardson told NBC Philadelphia. “So, I’m completely shocked that someone took a life yesterday and it was just an unfortunate situation.”

What happened at Wilmington Hospital?

Tuesday, June 16 at approximately 3:30 pm local time police were called to the 500 block of West 14th Street at Wilmington Hospital.

Police found two 19-year-old gunshot victims near the hospital cafeteria. One of the victims died from his injuries. As of Wednesday, another patient was in critical but stable condition.

A ChristianaCare spokesperson confirmed to NBC Philadelphia that Wallace-Bey and the two victims were employees of the hospital at the time of the shooting. Officials described the incident as an isolated, targeted attack.

The hospital was placed on lockdown for several hours. Workers raised their arms and evacuated the building. The emergency department also triaged patients during this time.

Brian Pfeffer, a patient guide at Wilmington Hospital who was in the emergency room when the shooting occurred, described the moment he heard the gunfire.

“The overwhelming emotion was, like, honestly, get out of here,” he told CBS News. “I know it sounds scary, but that’s what they train us to do, get out. Schools, hospitals, there’s a lot of people who come here to be safe and now this happens. It’s scary, very scary.”

Pfeffer also called for action on gun violence: “I don’t have the answers, I’m not a politician, but someone needs to address something. This is a problem in America. You don’t hear about it anywhere else. Action has to be taken. I’m looking at the camera. You have to do something. This is unacceptable.”

How was Wallace Bay caught?

after shootingInvestigators said the gunman fled in a white Toyota RAV4. Police used surveillance technology to track the car from Wilmington to the 800 block of West Wellens Street in Philadelphia, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Surveillance video shows the RAV4 arriving at the location at 6:21 pm local time on Tuesday. In the video, a woman approaches the driver and a short time later another woman gets out of the car. Then both women walked away.

Police later spotted Wallace-Bey leaving a nearby home and getting into the passenger seat of a 2020 Toyota Sienna operating as Uber, sources said. Police stopped the Uber at Ninth Street and Lindley Avenue in Philadelphia and took Wallace-Bey into custody. He was then transported to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Wallace-Bey will reportedly be extradited to Delaware, where he faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer said the shooting felt personal.

“Today is a sobering reminder that no one is immune to the devastation of gun violence,” he said, according to CBS News.
