At least 17 people were killed and five injured on Monday when a speeding minibus crashed into a parked bus on a highway in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.The accident occurred near Mardan area on the Swat Highway when the bus hit a bus that was parked on the roadside due to an alleged mechanical problem, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.The parked bus was carrying passengers to the scenic Swat Valley when the accident occurred.After the accident, rescue workers and police rushed to the scene immediately.Shah Fahad, director general of the Rescue 1122 emergency service, said preliminary findings suggested driver negligence may have been the cause of the accident, the Associated Press reported.Rescue workers transferred the injured and the bodies of the deceased to nearby hospitals for treatment and identification.Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.Road accidents in Pakistan remain frequent due to poor road infrastructure, reckless driving and poor enforcement of traffic safety regulations.
