Hormuz control: Iran says it's 'legitimate right' to manage strait amid ceasefire talks with US

A senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has claimed that Tehran has the legal right to regulate the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategic oil shipping routes, as nuclear talks between Iran and the United States enter a critical stage.Mohsen Rezaei, the former commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Sunday that Iran’s control of the strait would “ensure national security” and end what he called “50 years of insecurity in the Gulf region,” Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported.Rezaei also said that Tehran was conducting simultaneous military preparations and diplomatic efforts amid ongoing tensions.“Our fighters pulled the trigger today and our negotiators are working hard to secure the rights of the Iranian people,” he said. “The war is being managed on two fronts.”The remarks come as U.S.-Iran negotiations appear to be approaching a critical stage. US President Donald Trump said via Truth Social on Saturday that “final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced soon.”Negotiators are working on a proposed memorandum that could outline a framework for ending months of conflict, reopening the Strait of Hormuz and potentially easing restrictions on Iranian shipping, according to multiple U.S. and Iranian media reports.According to reports, the issue of Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile will be resolved individually within 30 to 60 days.U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during a visit to India that further progress in negotiations could come as early as Sunday. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, with much of the world’s oil and gas shipments passing through the narrow waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to international markets.
