Butler reportedly fled on foot after the attack, and authorities managed to capture him nearby and take him into custody.

  1. Butler, 32, is an Escondido resident. He was arrested on murder charges and could face life in prison if convicted.
  2. Butler was a Navy veteran who suffered “severe post-traumatic stress disorder,” a friend told The California Post. Police do not believe he knew Sherron. They also believe the attack was not political and are speaking to witnesses.
  3. Friends of Butler told the publication that he “loved” the “Trump House” and lived just blocks away from it. The friend also reportedly said he supports President Donald Trump as a registered Republican.
  4. Butler’s friend was shocked by the attack, saying “this guy plays with Legos and Star Wars stuff,” The Washington Post reported. The family friend further said Butler was medicated and his mental illness made him debilitated. The friend pointed out that Butler served in the Navy for many years but was now unemployed and fighting his own demons, The Washington Post reported. The friend said he “sat in his room thinking everyone was going to get him.”
  5. Butler was reportedly restrained by a utility worker and booked into the Vista Detention Facility, where his arraignment is set for Friday. He is not eligible for bail.
