In midtown Manhattan, New York City, a 56-year-old woman fell into an uncovered manhole after stepping out of a parked Mercedes-Benz and died. The incident occurred at around 11:19 pm local time on Monday, May 16, outside the Cartier store located at 653 Fifth Avenue. The woman jumped 10 feet into a Con Edison manhole cover.They found the woman unconscious and unresponsive inside the manhole. She was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.A spokesperson for Con Edison told the outlet they were “saddened” by the woman’s death and said they were investigating how it happened. “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and safety remains our top priority,” they said.The woman’s family were at the scene Tuesday morning trying to understand how the unimaginable tragedy could have happened. There were no cones, warning signs or barriers around the manhole, her daughter-in-law told CBS News New York. The daughter-in-law, who was visibly shaken as she spoke, said the family is still trying to come to terms with the incident, CBS reported.
