White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt came under heavy criticism on social media for a recent post celebrating the voluntary deportation of immigrants from the U.S. over long-standing cases. The 28-year-old mum-to-be has been labeled a “demon” and advised to “revisit Christ” by social media users who were furious she was happy she had “lost hope” in immigration. While Levitt is no stranger to criticism for her press conference comments and social media posts, she sparked heated debate because she touched on an extremely sensitive topic right now in American society and politics.Levitt shared a link to a report on X (formerly Twitter) that reported an increase in voluntary deportations of detained immigrants tired of being held in facilities and jails for long periods of time, a practice some detainees called “shocking.” “Voluntary departures hit record highs as detained immigrants lose hope of being released or winning in court,” she wrote in the post.Many were quick to criticize her for celebrating immigrants leaving the country, calling her a “devil” for her joy at the news. “So you are not deporting them as you claim, but deliberately detaining them for long periods of time in order to torture and destroy them? Demons walk this earth and they are ruling this country,” one person wrote.“When people lose hope, that’s a win for you, maybe you might want to revisit the bite of Christ,” another suggested.“Ah yes, there’s nothing better than crushing people’s will to make a girl smile, eh, Caroline?” one quipped.Many pointed out that Leavitt’s religious and faith-based statements contradicted her beliefs and statements most of the time, leading to suspicion of the press secretary.
As White House press secretary, Levitt had to be the spokesman for numerous ICE operations, brutality and immigration incidents. In most cases, she has sided with the Trump administration, leading people to accuse her online. Most recently, she came under fire for celebrating the “huge success” of a Department of Homeland Security mission in Minneapolis that resulted in the killings of two U.S. citizens by ICE and Border Patrol agents. However, Levitt is not even tolerant of his own family when it comes to illegal immigration and deportation. Her nephew’s mother, Bruna Caroline Ferreira, was detained by ICE last November for overstaying her tourist visa, having a criminal record and not living with her 11-year-old son, who she shared with Michael Leavitt. “I guess what I would say to Carolyn is: Just because you went to Catholic school doesn’t mean you’re a good Catholic,” Ferreira said to Levitt. In December, she was released on bail and revealed to People magazine that she regretted choosing Leavitt as her son’s godmother over her sister. “You’re a mother now,” she continued. “How would you feel if you were me? … How would you feel if someone did this to you?”
