A severe thunderstorm is moving through the Austin area, and brief funnel clouds were reported Saturday, but there is no tornado threat in Central Texas.
The storm brought heavy rain, frequent lightning, small hail and strong wind gusts.
According to the latest alert from the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, “Isolated storms continue to develop around the Austin area, producing frequent lightning, small hail, and gusty winds. Brief funnel clouds may occur at the storm front, but are unlikely to pose a threat. Stay indoors while thunder roars.”
Meteorologist Avery Tomasko said there is no tornado threat in Central Texas.
He wrote on
A funnel cloud was reported in Hutto, about 27 miles northeast of Austin. Tomasko said the sighting was not a tornado.
“Not a tornado, but most likely a brief gust or landspout formed when two outflow boundaries collided and briefly increased wind shear near the surface,” he wrote.
