New Delhi: The Center on Friday showcased a new artificial intelligence-based system that can help detect fake hospital bills, forged medical documents and fraud under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme.The tools were showcased at the AB PM-JAY Automated Adjudication Hackathon Showcase 2026 organized by the Union Health Ministry, National Health Authority (NHA), IndiaAI Mission and IISc Bengaluru.Under the leadership of Prime Minister Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, the AI ​​system aims to reduce fraud, speed up settlement of insurance claims and increase transparency, officials said.Technologies demonstrated include a multilingual OCR system that can scan and classify medical documents, extract data from low-quality records and verify compliance with standard treatment guidelines.Another set of AI tools demonstrated the ability to analyze X-rays, CT scans and MRIs to help validate diagnostic and treatment claims submitted by hospitals.The team also demonstrated an AI model capable of identifying fake discharge summaries, manipulated billing records, ghost beneficiaries, and deepfakes of medical documents used in fraudulent claims.NHA CEO Dr Sunil Kumar Barnwal said India is one of the first countries in the global South to develop a health AI benchmark platform using India-specific datasets.Officials said the initiative aims to create a faster and more transparent digital claims system while reducing the manual workload of the government’s flagship health insurance program.
