Navy chief meets with Myanmar Navy leadership to discuss measures to strengthen ties between the two countries and enhance maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region

New Delhi: As part of efforts to strengthen the Modi government’s “Look East Policy”, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi met Myanmar Navy Chief Admiral Win Than in Nay Pyi Taw to discuss developing bilateral ties and enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region.Their meeting also focused on advancing naval engagement between the two countries, including maritime engagement opportunities, capacity building, training exchanges and Mobile Training Teams (MTT), hydrology and greater interoperability.Admiral Tripathi will pay an official visit to Myanmar from May 2 to 5.“As part of his ongoing visit to Myanmar, CNS Adm. Dinesh K Tripathi held discussions with Myanmar Navy Commander-in-Chief Adm. Htein Win in Nay Pyi Taw on May 26… “This meeting marks an important milestone in deepening inter-naval relations and enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region,” an Indian Navy spokesperson said on X.Admiral Tripathi met Myanmar Defense Minister General Tun Aung on Monday and discussed the overview of current bilateral relations.In a related development, the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar entered the Yangon port on Monday as part of India’s ongoing maritime activities in the region. During the visit, the Myanmar Navy will host the crew of the IOS Sagar for official interactions.Admiral Tripathi earlier met in Yangon with Rear Admiral Aung Aung Naing, Commander of the Central Naval Command of the Myanmar Navy, and Rear Admiral Khun Aung Kyaw, Commander of the Naval Training Command, to discuss issues such as strengthening navy-to-naval cooperation, strengthening existing defense partnerships and enhancing operational contacts.
