Manhattan building fire: Eyewitnesses recount horrific events

Resident Rita Vega described being awakened by the sound of fire alarms and people shouting.

“I mean, it’s painful, right? Because even though we’re on the second floor, it feels like 100 floors up,” she told CBS News. “Everybody’s scared to come down. But, we come down and we’re just letting our neighbors know, like, hey, come down. You’re safe.”

Manhattan fire victims taken to hospital

A total of 14 people were treated by EMS, including one firefighter who suffered minor injuries. Five people were taken to hospitals in critical condition, according to FDNY officials.

“This fire was a very serious fire. Unfortunately, there were a lot of sick people,” Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore said.

Boncino stressed the importance of building residents closing their doors in the event of a fire.

“Apartments with closed doors had little impact and no fires. Apartments with open doors had a greater impact and more fires,” she commented.

Manhattan building fire: More than 100 people displaced

Fire Chief John Espotito said about 100 people were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting those affected and is currently using MTA buses to provide temporary shelter.
