Kharagpur Rural was a separate parliamentary constituency in Pashim Medinipur, but after delimitation it was actually reorganized into the current Kharagpur and Kharagpur Sadar districts, and current official records and major election databases now only report the winners of these two seats, rather than the separate post-2011 “Kharagpur Rural”. The rural area that earlier came under Kharagpur Rural is now mainly represented by Kharagpur Assembly constituency, of which TMC’s Dinen Roy is the sitting MP. He won the 2021 elections with 1,09,727 votes, defeating BJP’s Tapan Bhuiya (73,497 votes) with 36,230 votes. Key issues in this largely rural agricultural cluster include dependence on small-scale and marginal farming, the need for better irrigation in Kharagpur I and adjacent blocks, and pressure on rural roads connecting villages to Kharagpur town and the industrial belt. Land use changes around the expanding network of railways, engineering hubs and highways have also heightened concerns over land acquisition, organized sector employment and environmental pressures, especially groundwater and pollution. A striking feature of the region is the coexistence of major state institutional centers (IIT Kharagpur, railway workshops, engineering industries) with villages with lagging literacy and income indicators, making demands for equitable development, local employment and improved rural services politically salient.
