Cole Thomas Allen: It’s all about D.C. prison security

Allen was first jailed on April 27 and placed in a “security cell,” described as a padded room with 24-hour lockdown protocols, and required to wear a “vest similar to a straitjacket,” as his attorneys described in documents filed in U.S. District Court. ColombiaReuters reports.

He was subsequently downgraded to “suicide prevention measures,” suggesting Allen Phone calls, visits from anyone other than legal representatives and being outside the cells are still prohibited except for legal consultations or showers with a chaperone, the document said. On Friday, a nurse recommended lifting those precautions. However, as noted in the document, those terms remained in effect during a visit by one of his public defenders that day.

Cole Thomas Allen: Here’s what the court documents say

Court records show that on April 6, 2026, Allen booked three nights at the Washington Hilton Hotel, specifically from April 24 to April 26, 2026. He took a train to Chicago from his residence near Los Angeles, and then took another train from Chicago to Washington. Allen arrived in Washington, D.C., at about 1 pm on April 24, 2026, and checked into the Washington Hilton Hotel that day.

Around 8:40 p.m., Allen approached the security checkpoint on the hotel’s terrace level, which leads to the ballroom. He ran past the magnetometer with his spear in hand. U.S. Secret Service agents stationed at the checkpoint heard a loud bang. A U.S. Secret Service officer wearing a bulletproof vest was shot in the chest.

In response, Secret Service officers drew their service weapons and fired multiple rounds at Allen, who fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries but was not hit. Police later arrested Allen, who was found to be in possession of a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38-caliber handgun.

After his arrest, Allen was informed of his Miranda rights and chose to exercise his right to remain silent. He was taken to Howard University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was taken into law enforcement custody.
