Supreme Court says hate speech is contrary to constitutional values, seeks reply from Tamil Nadu over Udhayanidhi’s remarks
Supreme Court Called on them to exercise restraint in public speech, saying hate speech undermines the country’s roots of fraternity, pluralism and multiculturalism.Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said hate speech stems from a perception of difference that breeds exclusion, where “others” are seen as alien, inferior or unworthy of equal respect.“…hate speech is fundamentally contrary to the constitutional value of brotherhood and undermines the moral fabric of our republic…” the court said.While courts have dealt with various contempt pleas in hate speech cases, the court sought the Tamil Nadu government’s response to the alleged hate speech by its deputy chief minister, considering the steps taken by the authorities Udayanidhi Stalin. “Speech aimed at… inciting hatred between communities or disturbing public peace corrodes the fundamental values of democracy,” the statement said.
