King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited the National 9/11 Memorial in New York City on Wednesday to honor the victims of the 2001 attacks. The stop was part of the royal couple’s four-day tour of the United States to mark the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. The two already met with President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump at the White House earlier this week.
King Charles and his wife also met with New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Mickey Sherrill and other dignitaries on Wednesday.
However, one talking point during their trip was Queen Camilla’s clothing choices. At the White House, observers noted that the outfits worn by members of the royal family and Melania Trump were not identical, but similar.

According to Business Insider, pre-coordination between royal staff and the first lady’s office is standard practice during major state visits to ensure sartorial choices reflect unity, respect and strategic visual balance.
Anita McBride, Laura Bush’s former chief of staff, previously said such plans included direct conversations with the royal dressmaker ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s 2007 visit to the United States.
For Monday’s White House welcome, Camilla wore a white coat dress with silver floral detailing, while Melania opted for a buttery yellow Adam Lips skirt suit. Although not identical, the exterior features complementary spring tones that create visual cohesion.
That coordination became even more apparent by Tuesday’s event at the White House tennis courts. Camilla wore a mint green Fiona Clare coat dress with white accessories and Queen Elizabeth’s Cullinan V diamond brooch, while Melania wore a light Ralph Lauren suit with an Eric Javits hat – a fusion of British and American fashion houses while maintaining a synchronized pastel palette.
Fashion strategist Lauren Rothman told Business Insider that the clothing choices reflected what she calls “visual diplomacy.”
“Unlike celebrities on the red carpet, the question isn’t, ‘Do they look good?'” For me, the question is, ‘Does the visual match the responsibility?’ ’” Rothman said. “I think the answer is yes, Melania’s visuals match the responsibility. She is elegant but not outstanding. This is what visual diplomacy does. “
Experts say this kind of sartorial planning is especially important during historic diplomatic moments like Charles and Camilla’s visit – Britain’s first state visit to the United States since Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited Washington in 2007.
