NEW DELHI: Exit polls in the high-stakes Assam battle released on Wednesday night showed a clear majority for the incumbent government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, with a majority of pollsters backing the BJP for a third consecutive term in the tea-producing state. The figures sideline the Congress, leaving the party further vulnerable and providing little advantage to the Gaurav Gogoi-led Congress campaign in Assam. Exit poll forecasts released by multiple agencies have pointed to a majority for the Assam government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, suggesting that the party led by incumbent Himanta Biswa Sarma may be re-elected for a third consecutive term.According to P-MARQ, the BJP is expected to win 82-94 seats, the Congress may get 30-40 seats and other parties may get 1-5 seats.Matrize’s estimates show the BJP leading with 85-95 seats, followed by the Congress with 25-32 seats and 6-12 others.Axis My India also predicts a strong performance by the BJP, with 88-100 seats, while the Congress is expected to secure 24-36 seats.JVC’s exit polls showed the BJP with 88-101 seats, the Congress with 23-33 seats and the rest of the state with 2-5 seats.Across all major pollsters, the trend generally points to a clear advantage for the BJP, while the Congress-led opposition appears to be significantly behind in the race. The 2026 Assam polls show a clear majority for the BJP with an average forecast of around 90 seats, while the Congress is expected to win around 30 seats and around 4-5 others, suggesting that the ruling party will lead comfortably. In a high-stakes election in Assam, CM-led BJP Himanta Biswa Sarmaaiming for a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the Congress party, led by Lok Sabha deputy Gaurav Gogoi, son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi, is making a strong push to regain a foothold in the state. The campaign has largely turned into a direct confrontation between the two prominent leaders, Himanta and Gaurav, characterized by heated exchanges.Assam went to polls for all 126 seats on April 9 with a turnout of over 85%, one of the highest in recent years.Notably, the surge in turnout occurred not just in rural areas but across urban centers, suggesting broad-based and enthusiastic voter participation across the state.
