FBI Director Kash Patel said, “The evidence is crystal clear: Cole Thomas Allen traveled to Washington, D.C., with the intent of assassinating President Trump and targeting members of the Trump administration. Thanks to the swift and professional heroic actions of our brave law enforcement partners, Allen did not succeed, and now, he will be held fully accountable. The FBI and our interagency partners worked around the clock for the past two days to investigate this case, and today’s charges are the first step in bringing justice and providing answers to the American people.”

“Cole Allen traveled across the country armed with a deadly weapon and planned to assassinate the President of the United States,” said Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. “The swift and courageous response of Secret Service officers prevented an unimaginable tragedy. There is no room for political violence in this city.”

Allen was reportedly informed of his Miranda rights and invoked his right to remain silent after his arrest. He was taken to Howard University Hospital with minor injuries but was later released and taken into law enforcement custody.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, during the shooting, “a Secret Service agent drew his service weapon and fired several shots at Allen, who fell to the ground and was slightly injured but not hit. Police later arrested Allen, who was armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38 caliber handgun.”

“This foiled plot was a brazen attempt to assassinate the President and numerous senior U.S. government officials,” said Darren Cox, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Washington Field Office. “Violence has never been an acceptable way to express political dissent. I want to thank our partners for their assistance in the aftermath of this attack, and we are working tirelessly to ensure that Allen is brought to justice.”
