Firefighters put out a blaze Thursday near the iconic First Reformed Church on 12th Street in Astoria, Queens, with video showing thick smoke and flames lighting up the area.

Some witnesses and local residents reported smoke coming from the neighborhood on social media.
One person reported: “There’s a fire in Astoria near the park. Smoke has engulfed the entire neighborhood and as far away as Broadway.”
Another resident added: “There is an active fire on 12th Street between Astoria Avenue and 27th Avenue in Astoria, Queens.”
A third person reported: “Can see huge plumes of smoke coming from Astoria Park and near the bridge. Hope everyone is okay.”
Another resident wrote: “The smoke is crazy. It’s blowing east. We’re near the hospital and have to close all the windows.”
Another added, “Citizen’s address is 27-21 12th Street. He said it was a residential fire that had spread to a 3-story church.”
One resident wrote: “Come here to see what’s going on, live on 30th ave, the smoke is getting very thick and hazy. Horrible.”
