Canadian tourist killed, 13 injured in Mexico pyramid shooting

A Canadian woman was shot dead and 13 others were wounded on Monday when a gunman opened fire on tourists at the Teotihuacan pyramids, an archaeological site north of Mexico City, authorities said.Six people were shot and seven were injured in the ensuing panic. Those wounded by gunfire included a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and child, a Brazilian and two Americans. Those injured in the scramble included a Russian, a Colombian, a Brazilian and four Americans, AFP reported.Mexico State Security Minister Cristobal Castaneda said the gunman, whose nationality was unknown, committed suicide after the attack. The shooting happened around noon at the Pyramid of the Moon, a 45-meter-high structure that visitors can climb. Videos on social media showed attackers firing intermittently from the middle of the pyramid as tourists hid or fled. In one video, a voice can be heard saying: “We have people shooting at us, look out for good friends, send security.”Authorities recovered a gun, a knife and unused ammunition from the scene and evacuated tourists. Police and National Guard personnel were deployed following the incident.Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said “we are deeply pained by what happened today in Teotihuacan” and called for a thorough investigation. Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand described it as a “horrible act of gun violence.”The site is more than 2,000 years old and attracts more than 1.8 million visitors annually, making it one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations.
