Chembera spoke about the incident on Tuesday, April 14, saying police were conducting a thorough investigation to determine the actual cause of Ashlee’s death. According to the BBC, local police said in a statement that Joe’s passport was also “seized.” It is understood he is speaking to police as a witness.

Chembera further stated that the investigation is ongoing and that Ashley’s family has been involved in the process, including sending representatives from the coroner’s office to assist with the investigation, authorized by the embassy and the victim’s family.
The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with other investigative agencies. An autopsy is being carried out on Ashley’s body at Lumumba Hospital in Unguja.
Chembera said hotel management received a report from a guest in room 24 that they heard an argument coming from room 25, where Joe and Ashlee were staying. The disturbance prompted management to move Joe to room 65, about an eight-minute walk from their original room.
Before the incident, Ashley reportedly asked a hotel employee for a charging cable because she was having issues with her own. The employee was asked to return in ten minutes and when he returned he found Ashley hanging from the clothesline. She was rushed to hospital but died.
Ashlee’s trip to Tanzania was to celebrate her 31st birthday and her recent engagement to Joe, whom she shared A few photos on Instagram. She was found dead at the Serval Safari Resort in Tanzania, and Joe later said Tanzanian authorities determined she had hanged herself and characterized the death as a suicide.
