Puducherry: What the numbers say
The Puducherry Legislative Assembly has 33 seats, 30 of which are directly elected. The remaining three members are nominated by the central government.
How parties are faring in 2021
After Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the final electoral roll of the Union Territory includes 944,211 voters. By comparison, the number of eligible voters for the 2021 parliamentary elections was 973,314, of whom 83.8% voted.A total of 294 candidates will contest the upcoming election, down from 323 candidates in the poll five years ago.
Puducherry assembly polls 2026
Chief Minister N Rangasamy, who founded the ruling AINRC in February 2011 after quitting the Congress party, is currently contesting elections with Thattanchavady and Mangalam. He also contested from two constituencies in the last election, winning from Thattachavady but losing from Yanam.
How the 2021 competition unfolds
A seat-by-seat analysis showed that in 13 districts, the winning candidate received less than 50% of the total district vote.In seven seats, the margin of victory was less than 1,000, including four with less than 500 margins. For example, Rangasamy lost to independent candidate Gollapalli Srinivas Ashok in Yanam by 655 votes. The smallest margin was found in North Karakal, where the winner received only 135 more votes than the second place winner. On the other hand, in the remaining 17 constituencies, every winner received at least 50% of the total votes cast. Of the winning candidates, only three registered margins of 10,000 votes or more. So, given Puducherry’s small population and limited electorate, even a small change in vote share could decide the outcome in several constituencies.
Seats that could decide 2026 outcome
Apart from the tight contest for seats in 2021, several high-profile constituencies will also play a key role in deciding the victory of the NDA or the Congress-DMK alliance.Tatanchavardi: The most high-profile seat is Thattachavady as it is likely to play a decisive role in deciding the next chief minister of Puducherry. CM Rangasamy is the sitting MP and his main challenger is former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam, who is currently the Lok Sabha MP in Puducherry and the Congress Party president in the Union Territory.Rangasamy, who has won here five times, had defeated Communist Party of India (CPI) nominee K Sethu Selvam by 5,456 votes in the previous assembly polls.
Tatan Chawadi and Mangalam
Mangalam: This is the second constituency Rangasamy is contesting in, repeating his 2021 strategy when he campaigned in Yanam. Mangalam is currently held by AINRC and won by its nominee C Djeacoumar, who defeated DMK’s Sun Kumaravel by 2,751 votes.Yanam: Another constituency associated with Rangasamy is Yanam, which has the same name as one of the four constituencies that make up Puducherry. The region is unique in that it is surrounded by another state – Andhra Pradesh – and Yanam is represented by independent Gollapalli Srinivas Ashok, who defeated AINRC founder and chairman in the last elections.
Yanam and Mannadipet
Manadipe: bjp Leader and Puducherry Home Minister A Namassivayam is the sitting MP from Mannadipet, making it another key seat to watch. He contested from here again and defeated DMK’s A Krishnan by a margin of 2,750 votes.Indira Nagar: The seat is an AINRC stronghold and has been in the party’s hands since 2011. Rangasamy has represented the seat twice while the current legislator is AKD Arumugam whose winning margin of 18,531 is the highest in 2021.
Indira Nagar and Nedugadu
Nedugadu: This is another seat dominated by AINRC, which has remained with the party since 2011. The current MLA is Chandira Priyanga, who resigned in October 2023 and is the only female minister in the Rangasamy cabinet. Priyanga had won here in 2016 as well.Raj Bhawan: The BJP, being an urban constituency, will face a test of prestige in Raj Bhavan as its Puducherry unit president Vice President Ramalingam is the candidate here. The conference is currently chaired by AINRC’s K Lakshminarayan, who also won in 2011 and 2016. Ramalingam was one of three MLAs nominated by the central government in the outgoing Assembly.
Raj Bhavan and Mudaliarpet
Mudaliyarpet: The seat is contested by BJP’s A Johnkumar and sitting DMK MLA L Sambath. John Kumar, a minister in Chief Minister Rangasamy’s cabinet and a former Congress MP, had won the Kamaraj Nagar constituency twice – first as a Congress candidate and later as a BJP candidate.Karakal North: In 2021, AINRC’s PRN Thirumurugan defeated Congress candidate AV Subramanian, with only 135 votes separating the winner from the runner-up. Thirumurugan is once again contesting from the seat, which he has won three times in a row.
Kalikal North and Bahur
Bahur: Bahur, one of the six seats won by the DMK in 2021 (when it emerged as the second largest party and the main opposition), is represented by R Senthilkumar of the party led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. The winning percentage here (211) is the second lowest since the DMK nominee defeated AINRC’s N Dhanavelou.Mahe Island: Like Yanam, Mahe is part of a region completely surrounded by another state of its own, Kerala. The winning percentage in the last election was only 300, the third lowest that year. This is a Congress seat won by the great old party Ramesh Parambath, who defeated independent challenger N Haridasan Master.
Mahe Island and Nellithorpe
Nellithorpe: Nellithorpe is another constituency where the margin of victory (496) was below 500 five years ago and was won by the BJP. Richards Johnkumar, son of Puducherry minister A Johnkumar, won and DMK’s V Karthikeyan emerged as runner-up.In the five Puducherry Assembly elections since 2001, voters in the union territory have not returned the current government to power since the Congress-led alliance came to power in 2006. Voters supported the AINRC within months of its formation in 2011, but the party was voted out after one term and replaced by the Congress Party.
what happened in the past few years
In the five Puducherry assembly elections since 2001, voters in the Union territory have not returned the current government to power since the Congress-led alliance came to power in 2006. In 2011, voters supported the AINRC within months of its formation, but the party was voted out after one term and replaced by Congress. The All India Congress has aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party for a second term in 2021, their second electoral partnership in Puducherry since they joined hands for the Lok Sabha polls in 2014. In the run-up to the current assembly elections, Puducherry’s union territory status and the BJP-led Center’s decision not to grant full statehood have emerged as key political issues that could have a major impact on the outcome.Counting of votes will take place on May 4, with four other states – Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal – also going to the polls this month.
