New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi India has taken a “decisive step” in its civilian nuclear energy journey after its prototype fast breeder reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam reached criticality, it said on Monday, marking a major milestone in the country’s nuclear energy programme.In X’s post, Prime Minister Modi The indigenously designed and built reactor represents progress in the second phase of India’s three-phase nuclear programme, and underscores the country’s long-term goal of utilizing its vast thorium reserves.“Today, India took a decisive step in its civilian nuclear energy journey, advancing the second phase of its nuclear programme,” Prime Minister Modi wrote.“The prototype fast breeder reactor designed and built indigenously by Kalpakkam has reached criticality,” he said.

The prime minister said the advanced reactor is capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, calling it a major technological achievement for India’s nuclear sector.“The ability of this advanced reactor to produce more fuel than it consumes reflects the depth of our scientific capabilities and the strength of our engineering enterprise,” Prime Minister Modi said. He added that the development was “a decisive step towards leveraging our vast thorium reserves during the third phase of the programme.”
