KOLKATA: The mother of a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital in 2024 has sparked a bitter political controversy as the BJP candidate after she threatened to throw out the Bengal chief minister in a purported campaign video Mamata Banerjee Get into the “gutter and beat her.” TMC Complaints have been filed with election committee.“Just like my daughter was beaten to death by being dragged by her hair, I will grab her (CM) hair and spin her around. If I meet the CM, I will either put her in jail or throw her in a gutter and beat her up,” the BJP’s Panihati candidate said in a video clip of an interaction in Sodhpur, a northern suburb of Kolkata, on Saturday night.Earlier, in the same interaction, the mother said she was “mainly speaking against the chief minister, who was responsible for my daughter’s death in a government hospital”, adding that her daughter was murdered for raising her voice against corruption in a government medical college.She also accused Nirmal Ghosh, now Panihati TMC MLA, of trying to destroy evidence in her daughter’s case. She alleged that Nirmal’s son Tirthankar, a TMC rival, was sent to “cover up the crime”.TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, calling the remarks a “serious threat to democratic values and public decency” and warning that they could spoil the electoral atmosphere. The party seeks immediate legal and disciplinary action.The BJP is yet to respond to the controversy. The candidate’s husband said they were unaware of any formal complaint and said the comments were made “in a moment of intense anger.”
