Meet Rini Sampath: Indian-born candidate becomes first South Asian to enter Washington, D.C. mayoral race

Indian-origin professional Rini Sampath has made history by becoming the first South Asian candidate to win a seat in the Washington, D.C. mayoral election.Sampath was born in Theni, Tamil Nadu. She moved to the United States with her family when she was seven. She has lived in Washington, D.C., for more than a decade and currently works as a government contractor. Her entry into the 2026 mayoral race comes as the city prepares for a competitive election scheduled for Nov. 3, with party primaries scheduled for June 16.Sampath, 31, ran as the Democratic candidate and positioned himself as a political outsider. She has said she is not supported by special interest groups and wants to focus on improving the city’s basic governance. Her campaign is built around the theme of “Solving Basic Issues,” focusing on everyday civic issues that impact residents. Her top priorities include repairing roads, solving wastewater problems in the Potomac River, lowering the cost of living and shortening emergency response times such as 911 services. She believes that the city government has been struggling to provide basic services, so it is necessary to focus on core responsibilities. To qualify for the ballot, Sampath’s campaign collected more than 4,500 signatures, a sign of early support for her candidacy. She described her campaign as a personal milestone and a moment for broader representation, noting that South Asians have made significant contributions to American society but remain underrepresented in government. Her campaign highlights her work in public service and government roles, participating in projects that improve city and services for residents. She says not coming from a traditional political background allows her to approach administrative issues in a more practical and direct manner. The race for mayor of Washington, D.C., is largely dominated by Democrats, with the primary expected to play a key role in determining the eventual winner. Sampas is running against several candidates, the two most prominent of which are Janeese Lewis George, an incumbent known for her progressive platform, and Kenyan McDuffie, a veteran political leader with a citywide reputation. Both are considered leading contenders in the mayoral race.
