The earthquake’s magnitude was initially reported as 5.1, but the US Geological Survey later revised it to 4.9.

The USGS said it struck one kilometer southeast of Boulder Creek, California. The U.S. government science agency said the quake struck at around 8:41:25 UTC (around 1:41 a.m. in California) at a depth of 10.9 kilometers.

Videos released by rescue agencies showed damaged buildings and flattened homes, and television stations showed scenes of people rushing outside and gathering in the streets to avoid the risk of building collapse.
