New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday unveiled its manifesto for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, outlining ambitious cultural, economic and governance promises aimed at cementing its position in the state. The document, released by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, lists out 31 promises of the party’s ‘Sankalp Patra’.Central to the declaration is the commitment to protect the land, heritage and dignity of Assam’s indigenous communities. The BJP also promised firm action against encroachments, including taking back land allegedly occupied by illegal settlers. In addition, the party proposes the implementation of a unified civil code and measures to strengthen law and order, arguing that these are crucial for long-term stability.
On the economic front, the BJP has pledged to invest Rs 500 crore to transform Assam into an important economic hub and gateway to eastern India. The manifesto emphasized infrastructure expansion, job creation for youth and sustainable development, with the leadership highlighting the decade of transformation under its rule. The party also claimed that improved opportunities are encouraging Assamese youth from global careers to return to the state.
What are the 31 promises of the BJP?Sankalp Patra ‘?
The BJP made the following promises in its manifesto:
- We will protect the land, heritage and dignity of Assam’s indigenous people
- We will strengthen legislative protection to protect the civilization, heritage and rights of the people of Assam
- We will invest Rs 50 crore to position Assam as the eastern gateway of India and be supported by the Asom Ghat Shakti Master Plan to ensure timely completion of projects
- We will launch Asom Nagar Unnayan Abhijan in collaboration with the central government
- We will launch Badh Mukt Assam Mission, invest over Rs 18,000 crore to make Assam flood-free
- We will provide young people with opportunities for employment and self-employment
- We will help the youth of Assam become self-reliant
- We will continue to provide rice, masur dal, sugar and salt08 including mustard oil at subsidized prices and provide free ration to the poorest poor families.
- We will launch the “one district, one university” plan to ensure full coverage of medical and engineering colleges in all districts and improve the quality of higher education in Assam
- We will transform education in Assam by ensuring education for all, building world-class institutions and expanding faculty
- We will strengthen the dignity, security and economic independence of women in Assam
- We will ensure promotion, protection and preservation of Assam’s indigenous culture
- Strengthen farmers’ income security
- Provide financial assistance to fishermen to ensure income support during the fishing moratorium.
- We will launch Asom Krishi Unnayan Abhijan to modernize and strengthen agricultural market infrastructure and supply chain management
- We will actively strive for the central government to implement the recommendations of the ministerial group on the arrangement of the six communities of KochRajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Adivasis & Tea Tribes, Chutia, Moran and Matak, while safeguarding the constitutional, social and economic rights of the existing ST communities.
- We will seek the central government to consider including the seven communities of Bishnupriya Manipuri, Bhar or Rajbhar, Newar, Bhujel, Sabar, Satnami and KiranSheikh in the Central List of Other Backward Classes, in line with the existing recognition in the national OBC list.
- We will work towards granting constitutional status to the Tribal Autonomous Councils of Mising, Laba, Sonowalkachari, Tengalkachari, Deori, Tiwa and Borokachari.
- We will ensure inclusive development and land security for tribal indigenous peoples
- We will ensure the all-round development of tea tribe communities
- Pradhan MantriAwas Yojana (Gramin and Urban) has completed over 22 lakh houses and we will construct another 15 lakh houses to ensure that every family has a Pucca house with basic amenities.
- We will launch Nijut Sipini to provide financial assistance to one million traditional weavers to support their livelihoods and strengthen handloom production.
- Building on the rapid economic growth since 2016, we will double Assam’s economy to $150 billion by 2031 and expand to $300 billion by 2036
- We will provide a wage subsidy of 10,000 rupees per employee for investment in emerging industries in Assam to support the training and employment of local youth and strengthen incentives for advantageous enterprises in Assam.
- We will launch Asom Parjyatan Bikash Abhijan to make Assam a leading tourist destination.
- We will ensure that all signed peace agreements are implemented on time
- We will look after the welfare of government employees, promote good governance, and strengthen law and order
- Implement precise policies to promote the comprehensive development of sports across the state
- Develop Dibrugarh as the second capital of Assam
- Ensure comprehensive development of Barak Valley
- Assam’s healthcare investment will increase from Rs 2,600 crore in 2016 to Rs 8,900 crore by 2025, building on this, we will strengthen the health infrastructure in the state
