A U.S. Secret Service agent is assigned to protect the former first lady Jill Biden A man accidentally shot himself in the head at Philadelphia International Airport on Friday, authorities said.

Biden was not in the area on Friday morning when the agent was injured in a “negligent discharge of a firearm,” agent spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told The Associated Press.

Philadelphia Police Officer Tanya Little said that according to preliminary reports, the agent accidentally discharged his vehicle while driving an unmarked car shortly before 9 a.m.

Other law enforcement officers arrived to assist the injured agent, who was transported to a local hospital. Guglielmi said he was being treated for his injuries and was in stable condition.

Airport operations have not been affected, said Heather Redfern, public affairs manager for the city’s aviation department.

Secret services release statement

In an unmentioned statement BidenThe Secret Service said the incident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. ET and resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to the agent.

“The protected persons’ movements were not affected and they were not present when the incident occurred,” the statement said.

“The Secret Service Office of Professional Responsibility will review the facts and circumstances of this incident,” the Secret Service said.

The Secret Service is tasked with ensuring the safety of current and former presidents, vice presidents, their families and foreign leaders, and also serves as an investigative agency.
