Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been breaking records for the past year or so and is gearing up for his second intense pulsed light Expectations are extremely high for the 15-year-old wonder boy this season. While the jury is still out on whether he can overcome his second-season blues – with teams better prepared to deal with his brutality – Suryavanshi is not one to back down or get bogged down. Last season, he showed that he can hang with the top players in the IPL, scoring 252 runs in 7 games, including 100s and 50s, at a strike rate of 206.56. So, what can we expect from Sooryavanshi season 2? A lot – plus these five iconic IPL records, once considered unbreakable, could well fall to the 15-year-old.
Personal High Score – 175 (Chris Gayle)*
The highest individual score in the IPL belongs to the iconic Chris Gayle when he unleashed a veritable hailstorm – or ‘Gaylestorm’ – against the hapless Pune Warriors bowling attack with a staggering 175 (instead of 66 in the 2013 edition) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Hitting 13 fours and 17 sixes, it was a match the likes of which has not been seen since, and many believe it is a record that will stand the test of time. But with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi breaking records left, right and centre, is Gayle’s record finally in danger? This may well be the case. Sooryavanshi likes to get really, really big once inside. For example:His highest score in junior T20 matches was 144 runs off 42 balls and he was eliminated in the 15th over. His highest score in youth ODIs was 175 off 80 balls in the 2026 Under-19 World Cup final, where he was eliminated in the 26th over. His second best score was 171 off only 95 balls in the U-19 Asian Cup, but he was eliminated again in the 33rd round. He scored 190 off 84 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and was eliminated in the 27th over. Need any proof that this breakthrough beast can break Chris Gayle’s unrivaled personal record of highest scores in the IPL?
Maximum six runs per innings – 17 (Chris Gayle)
Again, the record belongs to Gayle and was provided by the aforementioned bureau. A team hitting 17 sixes in a T20 innings is a crazy feat in itself, but beating it all alone is unmatched. Then again, records are meant to be broken, and if anyone can eclipse the great Gayle, it’s the savage Soriyavanshi.Back to the sample: Sooryavanshi hit 15 sixes in his 144-run knock in youth T20s, another 15 sixes in the Under-19 World Cup final and another 15 sixes in an innings of 190 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Well, it should be a fair bet that Sooryavanshi can take three runs in the IPL.
Most six points in a session – 59 (Chris Gayle)
If we are betting on Sooryavanshi to break the record for most sixes in an innings, then let’s go a step further and extend it to the record for most sixes in an IPL season. Not surprisingly, the record is held by Gayle, who hit 59 sixes in the 2012 edition. Andre Russell managed 52 games for KKR in 2019. Only two players have hit more than 50 sixes in a single edition, including Gayle twice (51 in the 2013 season). In his debut season, Sooryavanshi hit 24 sixes in 7 games. Therefore, if he plays 14 games throughout the season, it would be a bit conservative to expect him to hit 50 sixes.
Highest field goal percentage in a season – 234.34 (Jake Frazier-McGurk)
Now, this would be a difficult record to break down and would require some kind of parameter. Considering that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played all 14 games or close to 14 and faced at least 10 goals in each game, we set the mark to at least 100 goals in a season to determine the best goal rate. With that in mind, Jack Fraser-McGurk’s 2024 Cyclone season tops the list, with a total of 141 shots faced in 9 games and a shooting percentage of 234.34. Why do we think Sooryavanshi can rise above this? Well, Sooryavanshi came very close last season. In the seven games he played, he faced 122 passes and finished with a 206.55 OPS. So if he has a surprise season this time around, there’s a real chance Soriyavanshi will be among the top in terms of strike rate – but the driver here is facing a fair amount of balls.
There are six sixes in an inning
Finally, the record we have seen in first-class cricket, Group A and T20 groups (excluding IPL): 6 sixes per over. The best score in the IPL is five sixes in an innings, witnessed five times. Gayle was the first to do it, hitting five sixes off Pune Warriors’ Rahul Sharma in 2012. Rahul Tewatia entered IPL folklore with his five sixes off West Indies international Sheldon Cottrell in 2020, while Ravindra Jadeja took on RCB’s Harshal Patel in 2021 He repeated the feat, also tying the player with the most points in a single round with four points.Linku Singh Then produced one of the most thrilling runs in IPL history, hitting Yash Dayal for five sixes in the final over to win the match for KKR. In 2025, Riyan Parag hit five sixes off KKR’s Moeen Ali. Will Sooryavanshi – not only add his name to this list – but finish the set with six sixes in an over – a first in the IPL?
