23-year-old U.S. Air Force pilot dies in heavy equipment accident at California space base
A 23-year-old U.S. Air Force pilot died after the heavy equipment he was operating rolled down an embankment at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the New York Post reported, citing officials.Airman 1st Class Cedric Eneluna was pronounced dead at the scene following Thursday’s crash. The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Office confirmed his death, and officials said no one else was injured.The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, and authorities have not disclosed the type of equipment involved.A safety investigation committee has been convened to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Military leaders mourn
U.S. Space Force Col. James T. Horne III, commander of Delta 30 and Vandenberg Space Force Base, paid tribute to the young pilot, who he said was mourned by the entire base community.“We, the Vandenberg family, grieve with Cedric’s loved ones and his teammates,” the New York Times quoted Horn as saying. “His character, dedication and genuine care for others left a deep impression on his teammates.”Lt. Col. Seth Poulsen, 30th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, also recalled Eneluna’s positive attitude and commitment to those around him, saying he “brought the best out of everyone.”
First mission after joining the army
Eneluna is originally from the Philippines and later moved to St. Louis, Missouri. He enlisted in the Army on March 5, 2024, and Vandenberg was his first duty station.He served in the Pavement and Equipment Flying Team of the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron, informally known as the “Geoboys.” The team is responsible for maintaining the installation’s roads, airfields and other critical infrastructure that supports launch, test and range operations.Eneruna earned the respect of his colleagues through his professionalism, humility and helpful attitude, according to the base. Teammates describe him as someone who enjoys taking on challenges, works tirelessly and makes those around him feel included.
Strategic bases play key role in space and missile missions
Vandenberg Space Force Base, located near Lompoc on California’s central coast, is one of the United States’ major military spaceports.The device supports satellite launches into Earth orbit and conducts unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile testing, with the mission ending at the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site in the Marshall Islands.Details of the memorial service have not yet been released, officials said. An investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
