NEW DELHI: Around 12 lakh households across 11 states and Union Territories have so far self-enumerated during the House Registration Operation (HLO) phase of Census 2027. More than half of these households had used the self-counting facility in the past 4-5 days. With the 15-day self-census window ending on Wednesday in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Karnataka, Odisha, NDMC and cantonment areas in Delhi-NCR, Mizoram, Sikkim and Lakshadweep, census field operations will begin on Thursday with door-to-door enumeration in eight states/Union Territories. These field surveys will last for one month, until May 15. Given that the 1.2 million households enumerated so far represent only a tiny percentage of the eight states’ total population, enumerator visits are critical to obtaining complete and accurate data on housing conditions and household facilities.A Home Office spokesperson said on Monday that the HLO phase of the census lays an important foundation for evidence-based planning and the development of welfare and development plans. The self-census window is open till April 19 in Gujarat, Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and till April 24 in Uttarakhand. The campaign will begin in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Monday and in Bihar on Friday. For the first time, Self-Census (SE) facility is available for Census 2027, which is also India’s first digital census. The 2027 Census Handle said in a post onResidents completing a self-enumeration should have a Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) ready and shared with the enumerator during the site visit to complete the HLO process. All data collected under the Census Act, 1948 are strictly confidential and used only for statistical purposes and development planningThe 2027 Census will be conducted for the first time using digital tools while retaining the traditional door-to-door census framework to ensure comprehensive and accurate coverage. During field visits, enumerators will collect data digitally using a dedicated mobile app to ensure greater accuracy and faster processing.
