12 killed in Spanish wildfires, 23 foreigners missing
A fast-moving wildfire swept through southern Spain on Friday, killing at least 12 people and leaving people trapped in burning vehicles and trying to escape on foot. This wildfire is already one of the highest in Spain’s recent history. The authorities said that 23 people are still missing and the death toll may rise. Many of the victims are believed to be foreigners, they added. The fire, which started in a steep canyon area on Thursday, destroyed forest and large tracts of brush in the Los Gallardos region of Andalusia. An unidentified man who was evacuated said he saw “gas bottles exploding, houses on fire and windows broken”.
