Iran vows revenge for General Qasem Soleimani
Since 2020, Iran has openly sought to assassinate the president in response to an attack ordered by Trump that resulted in the death of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps General Qasem Soleimani.
On Saturday, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son and designated successor to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a written threat against Trump and the United States.
“We pledge to avenge the martyr leaders and all martyrs of these two wars, allowing criminals and dishonorable killers to avenge them,” Khamenei said in a statement.
An isolated young Khamenei said the country was demanding retribution for his father’s death after his father was reportedly killed in an airstrike on the day war broke out.
Banners proclaiming revenge against Trump were prominently displayed in Tehran this week as Iranians prepared for the burial of Ali Khamenei.
At Thursday’s funeral, many of Khamenei’s supporters held a sign that read “We will kill Trump.”
The war between the United States and Iran
Trump issued a warning to Iran after Ali Khamenei’s funeral, during which he explicitly called for his assassination. The incident further highlights rising tensions in the Middle East, especially as interim agreements aimed at resolving the conflict falter amid ongoing hostilities in the region.
Trump expressed his views on his Truth social platform after senior U.S. officials urged Iran to publicly declare that the Strait of Hormuz is open and that ships traveling through the vital passage will no longer face attack.
Tehran has so far refrained from making such a statement, instead insisting that the strait remains within its jurisdiction and that it should be allowed to impose fees on ships passing through, challenging long-standing norms that treat the strait as an international waterway.
In the past few days, the United States has launched multiple air strikes against Iran, and Iran has also launched counterattacks against various countries in the Middle East. The military actions were triggered by Iran’s attacks on three ships in the strait earlier this week.
