Zoran Mamdani Facing serious charges Monday, critics claim New York City mayor refuses to condemn ISIS in new angle in IED case Gracie Mansion during last week’s protests. Two men, Emir Barat and Ibrahim Nick, were suspected of carrying explosives to a protest outside the mayor’s residence. They have been detained.
On Monday, Police Chief Jessica Tish said the bombing was “being investigated as an act of terrorism inspired by Islamic State.” However, Barratt and Nick have not yet been charged with anything.
“They are suspected of coming here to commit acts of terrorism,” Mamdani told a news conference outside Grace Tower. “There is video showing these two individuals throwing two devices at protesters. The police department has determined that these were improvised explosive devices designed to cause injury, disabling or worse.”
“Let me be clear: Anyone who comes to New York City and commits violence on our streets will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” he added.
What does Zohran Mamdani have to say about the protests?
On Sunday, Mamdani condemned the organizers of the right-wing rally but did not comment directly on the bomb throwers.

“Yesterday, white supremacist Jack Long organized a protest outside Gracie Towers that was rooted in bigotry and racism. There is no place for this kind of hate in New York City. It was an affront to our city’s values and the unity that defines who we are,” the mayor’s statement read.
“What follows is even more disturbing. Violence at protests is absolutely unacceptable. Attempting to use explosive devices and harm others is not only criminal, it is reprehensible and goes against who we are.”
Investigation reaches Pennsylvania
Meanwhile, local police said officers searched a home in the northeastern Pennsylvania town of Middletown, where another federal investigation was underway in nearby Newtown. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., wrote in a social media post on Sunday that both investigations are related to incidents outside the New York mayor’s mansion.
The homemade devices did not explode during raucous counter-protests on Saturday against anti-Islam demonstrations led by far-right activist Jack Long, a Democrat, the first Muslim to hold public office and a critic of Mamdani. Mamdani and his wife were not at the house, known as Gracie Mansion, at the time.
