A viral video on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked a heated controversy in the digital sphere. Joel Webbon, a Texas pastor who leads the right-wing Responsive Ministries, and co-host Wesley Todd have faced backlash for their comments targeting the role of women in society and the church. The video, highlighted by Right Wing Watch, captures the pair arguing that female leadership is “offensive to God.”In the video, Todd claims that in God’s Word and the nature He created, God says “women need to shut up.” “They need to be quiet, they can’t dictate, they can’t rule because they do stupid things,” Todd said. Webb agreed with his co-host, claiming that it may sound harsh, mean and un-Christian, but the statement is actually “very biblical and pleasing to God.” “When your daughter talks to her dad, does she need to shut up at home? No, that’s not what we’re talking about,” he said, while specifically mentioning areas where women shouldn’t speak. In the public square, in ruling civil offices of government, in churches, in positions of authority, and in family decision-making with men as the “federal heads” of the family, Webb said, “Absolutely, Wes is right, women, shut up!” He also called women’s comments “literally offensive to God!”Many netizens condemned Todd and Weben’s remarks online. “But I thought right-wing men support and love women? Well – it seems like all they want is control. Total control,” one user wrote. “They seem to have forgotten that God appointed Queen Esther to lead the army. It’s time to learn,” said another.Another claimed: “When Joel Webb and his brothers get tired of dehumanizing black people, they’ll turn to dehumanizing women.”The clip is from a recent episode of their podcast titled ‘Gay, Jezebel and why England is becoming Catholic’, in which they criticized the appointment of Lady Sarah Mullally as Archbishop of Canterbury, saying it went against “the Bible and nature”.Todd and Weben cite “pro-life” Mullally and an “Indian” Anglican priestess who suggested using sex toys for pleasure as examples of why women should keep quiet. Webbon also added that if a woman wants to find a good man, she should “be quiet, be harmonious, and not compete with men.”In another video played on their YouTube channel NXR Studios, the pair claimed that female pastors are not allowed in churches because it is “the word of God” and they follow it because they are conservatives and women are “incapable” of doing it well. Webbon even said he would change the voting system to a more “representative” one, with men voting for extended families – brothers, fathers, husbands. Some of the videos have shocking titles, such as “Godly women wear what their husbands want” and “The era of girl bosses is over.”However, this was not an isolated incident for the pair. Previously, in February 2025, Todd found himself in hot water for claiming that pregnant women should not be allowed to serve, calling him “stupid.” Webbon has made similar remarks many times in their videos before.
