Why J.D. Vance might be recalled from Islamabad after Trump’s latest Iran talks update – explained

According to ABC News’ Jonathan Carr, President Donald Trump said shortly after that the Vice President JD Vance The White House issued a clarification that he would not join a U.S. delegation visiting Pakistan on Monday to reach a U.S.-Iran peace deal. Officials told CNN that Vance will attend the talks in Islamabad along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Earlier in the day, Carr reported: “President Trump just told me Vance is not going to Islamabad. He said the issue is security – the Secret Service can’t do that on 24 hours’ notice.”

J.D. Vance may be asked to return

Vance will travel to Islamabad on Monday, CNN reported. However, there is more to this story. The Secret Service reportedly doesn’t want the vice president and president to be in the same place at the same time. This is because of security risks. Trump said he might travel to Pakistan if a final deal comes to fruition. Vance is likely to return to the United States before the president boards the plane.

“Things have changed,” a White House official told CNN in response to the confusion and conflicting information.

Trump steps up pressure on Iran

Meanwhile, Trump issued a stern warning to Iran, threatening a massive strike if a deal is not reached before the ceasefire expires. He said on his Truth social platform that he was offering Iran a “reasonable deal” and that if Tehran refused, “the United States will destroy every power plant and every bridge in Iran.” No more Mr. Good guy!

He added: “They will fall quickly and easily if they don’t accept the deal, and I would be honored to do what has to be done, which is what every other president over the past 47 years should have done with Iran.”

The 79-year-old also accused Tehran of violating the agreement, calling the latest actions a “complete violation” of the two-week ceasefire.

Strait of Hormuz closed again

The strategic Strait of Hormuz remained closed on Sunday after Iran reversed its previous stance and announced another closure of the waterway. The closure comes despite earlier signs that the channel, vital for global oil shipments, would reopen during the ceasefire.

Tensions have further escalated following multiple incidents in the Gulf.

Britain’s maritime security agency said Iran’s Revolutionary Guards opened fire on an oil tanker on Saturday, while security intelligence firm Pioneer Technology reported that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened to “destroy” an empty cruise ship as it fled the Gulf.

In a separate case, the British agency said it had received reports that a ship had been “hit by unknown projectiles, causing damage to containers” but that no fire broke out.

Ceasefire Agreement Update

Despite rising tensions, diplomatic channels remained active ahead of Wednesday’s ceasefire deadline. Mike Walz expressed optimism about the upcoming negotiations, saying the new round could produce “incredibly important” results.

As part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the situation, the same group of negotiators met for the final time on 11 and 12 April.
