The possibility of reopening the prison has sparked fierce opposition from former inmates, advocacy groups and nearby residents.
Critics argue that the facility’s history of abuse makes it unsuitable to reopen without significant accountability and reform measures. Some former prisoners have reportedly written letters to local leaders urging them to oppose any ICE takeover.
The prison was recently closed after an Associated Press investigation uncovered widespread allegations of staff mistreatment of inmates.
