Ted Turner, the businessman who founded CNN and helped pioneer the concept of 24-hour television news, has died at the age of 87, according to a statement from Turner Enterprises. He died peacefully surrounded by everyone familymarking the end of a decades-long career.
Often described as outspoken and unconventional, turner Established a broad portfolio extending from news into entertainment and sports. His ventures included early cable television “superstations,” film libraries and professional teams.

born in cincinnati After spending part of her childhood in boarding school, Turner’s family moved to the American South in 1938. He described a demanding family environment and a strained relationship with his father, who was known for being a strict disciplinarian.
His sister died after a long illness, and his father committed suicide in 1963, leaving Turner, then 24, to take over the family’s billboard business.

In 1970, Turner purchased a nearly bankrupt Atlanta television station and expanded from outdoor advertising into media. He revived it by syndicating shows, movies and sports, gradually expanding its reach and profitability.
By the mid-1970s, he turned the station into a national cable television “superstation” using satellite transmissions. He also purchased teams such as the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks.
In 1980, Turner launched CNN, the first channel dedicated to around-the-clock news coverage. The idea was initially met with skepticism because traditional broadcasts were limited to scheduled announcements.
The network’s model gained traction during major global events, including the Gulf War, when audiences relied on constant live coverage. The growth of CNN subsequently expanded internationally, helping to establish the 24-hour news cycle as the standard format.

Turner’s personal life attracted public attention, including his 1991 marriage to actress Jane Fonda. The couple separated after a decade but stayed in touch in the years that followed.
Professionally, Turner sold his media assets to Time Warner in 1996. The subsequent merger with AOL in the early 2000s resulted in significant losses, and Turner ultimately relinquished an active leadership role.
After stepping back from day-to-day business, Turner focused on large-scale philanthropy. In 1997, he pledged $1 billion to the United Nations, one of the largest individual donations at the time.
He also invested in conservation efforts, becoming a major landowner and working on wildlife restoration, including efforts to increase the bison population on his property.
In 2018, Turner revealed that he suffered from Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disease. Despite health challenges, he remained devoted to charity work and public life in his later years. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, according to a statement from his family.
