An Afghan special forces veteran who fought alongside British troops is fighting with British troops after suffering serious brain injuries in an alleged attack while working as a security guard in the UK, police said. After the accident at the train station in late March, the victim, Nour Aziz Ahmedzai, 39, was rushed to hospital. Two teenage girls have been arrested in connection with the case and have been released on bail while investigations continue.
Ahmedzai is a former Afghan army officer and translator who worked closely with British soldiers during operations in Afghanistan. He reportedly joined the Afghan security forces at age 16 and later became a member of an elite counterterrorism unit responsible for responding to major attacks, including the 2018 Taliban siege of the InterContinental Hotel and the 2020 massacre at Kabul’s maternity hospital. He also worked as a translator for the British Army and resettled in the UK after the Taliban takeover in 2021.
Ahmedzai reportedly fled Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power, including a dramatic prison break in which he reportedly disguised himself as a woman to avoid checkpoints. After arriving in the UK under a resettlement scheme from his Afghan allies, he initially faced homelessness before rebuilding his life, eventually finding work as a railway security guard.
British Transport Police said officers were called to the station at around 8.31pm on March 26 following reports that a railway worker had been assaulted.Ahmedzai was later taken to hospital with brain bleeding and severe head injuries and is in a serious but stable condition. Doctors said his recovery could take months and there was uncertainty about long-term damage.
Police arrested two teenage girls in connection with the incident. Both men have been released on bail as inquiries continue.Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and urged witnesses to come forward.Georgia Morse, Ahmedzai’s ex-partner and mother of his young child, has reportedly taken a break from her life to support his recovery.Doctors warned he may have difficulty retaining new memories in the short term and recovery could take six months or more before the full neurological effects can be assessed. Before fleeing Afghanistan, Ahmedzai served as deputy commander of the Special Counter-Terrorism Force and worked closely with British military personnel during high-risk operations. He was later granted asylum in the UK under the government’s resettlement scheme for Afghan nationals who supported British forces during the war.Police have not linked the attack to terrorism or confirmed a motive. British Transport Police are still actively investigating the case.
