President of the United States Donald Trump Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Appointed Bill Pulte As acting director of national intelligence, he handed one of the government’s top intelligence jobs to an official best known for overseeing the housing finance sector.
Trump announced the decision on Tuesday, saying Pulte would take over Tulsi Gabbardhe will resign at the end of June. The president posted the news on Truth Social, praising Pulte’s management experience and financial oversight qualifications.
“I am appointing William J. Pulte, Administrator of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, to serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence,” Trump wrote.
Pulte currently serves as director of FHFA, which oversees the housing finance system, which includes mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. According to Trump’s statement, he will continue to lead both organizations while serving as acting director of national intelligence.
The president highlighted Pulte’s role in overseeing the mortgage market and managing trillions of dollars in housing-related assets.
Trump said Pulte had experience dealing with “America’s most sensitive issues,” pointing to his oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which together support a large portion of the U.S. housing market.

Pulte has become one of the most controversial officials in the administration as he works to pursue mortgage fraud allegations involving several high-profile politicians, CBS News reported.
While at FHFA, Pulte filed criminal referrals to the Justice Department involving Trump’s political opponents, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and former Congressman Eric Swalwell.
The actions drew widespread political attention and scrutiny, making his appointment to oversee the nation’s intelligence community a notable development.
Unlike many previous intelligence directors, Pulte is expected to retain his current position while serving as acting director of national intelligence.
Trump said Pulte will continue to serve as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while leading the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.
The appointment will see a housing finance official lead an agency tasked with coordinating U.S. intelligence community efforts, a position traditionally held by figures with national security, military or intelligence backgrounds.
