Four astronauts will take part in the historic 685,000-mile journey to the moon. this artemis ii The rocket launch is scheduled for Wednesday evening, April 1. It will mark the first time humans have flown beyond low Earth orbit since the Apollo 17 moon landing mission in 1972.
The mission involves a flyby of the moon, where astronauts will help test critical spacecraft systems. Aboard the Orion spacecraft, called Integrity, will be three Americans and one Canadian: Reed Wiseman, Victor J. Glover Jr., Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen.
Wiseman is the commander of the Artemis 2 mission. He is the former chief astronaut of NASA and a test pilot of the United States Navy. He has lived in space on the International Space Station for 165 days.

one baltimore Wiseman, a local, was selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2009 and served as a flight engineer on the International Space Station’s Expedition 41 from May to November 2014. During the 165-day mission, Reed and his teammates completed more than 300 scientific experiments in the fields of human physiology, medicine, physical science, earth science, and astrophysics. It was his first spaceflight, which included “two trips as the lead spacewalker outside the orbital complex, lasting nearly 13 hours,” according to NASA.
“Reed also built a strong presence on social media throughout the mission by sharing the raw emotion of spaceflight through the eyes of a novice pilot,” NASA said. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and a master of science degree in systems engineering from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He served as chief of the Astronaut Office. Wiseman has been named commander of NASA’s Artemis II mission.
Glover was the mission pilot. He is a NASA astronaut and U.S. Navy captain who was the first black astronaut to reside permanently on the International Space Station. He spent six months on the Crew-1 mission.
According to NASA, Glover was selected as an astronaut in 2013 while serving in the U.S. Senate. one california NASA said he “most recently served as pilot of the Crew-1 Crew Dragon spacecraft called Resilience, which flew to the International Space Station, and he also served as flight engineer on Expedition 64/65.”

Glover earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering as a two-sport athlete. He is a Navy pilot and former test pilot for the F/A-18 Hornet, Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler.
According to NASA, “He and his family were stationed at numerous locations in the United States and Japan and deployed in both combat and peacetime.”
