President Donald Trump on Sunday described the man who tried to break into the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a “Christian hater” and a “sick man,” as investigators pieced together the motives behind a high-profile security breach in Washington. After the incident, Trump said the suspect wrote a manifesto expressing hostility toward Christians. “This guy is a sick person,” he said. “When you read his manifesto, you see he hates Christians.” He also claimed that the suspect’s family had earlier raised concerns with authorities, describing him as “a very troublesome man.”Trump also claimed that the suspect’s family had earlier raised concerns. “His sister or his brother are actually complaining about it … and they’re even complaining to law enforcement. He’s a very troubled man,” Trump said.
The incident occurred outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton Hotel where the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner was taking place. According to officials, the suspect tried to break through security near the entrance and rushed toward the venue.Shots were fired during the confrontation and a Secret Service officer was shot at close range but was saved by a bulletproof vest. Security personnel quickly subdued the suspect and prevented him from entering the ballroom where Trump and other senior officials were seated. The situation triggered panic in the venue, with guests hiding and the president being rushed to safety. The event was later canceled and is expected to be rescheduled.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of California.Authorities said Allen tried to breach security at the Washington Hilton hotel where an annual media gala was being held. He was armed with multiple weapons and is believed to have acted alone.Trump called him a “lone wolf” and a “very troublesome” person. Investigators said Allen traveled across state lines before arriving in Washington and checked into the hotel hosting the event. He was said to be carrying multiple weapons at the time of the incident, believed to have been recently purchased. Officials also said he has not actively cooperated with the investigation and is expected to face multiple charges.
Trump praised the actions of the Secret Service and law enforcement officials, saying they acted quickly to neutralize the threat. He described them as “strong, determined men” and said they “coldly stopped him”.“They stopped him coldly and I can tell you, there was no play going on. You just have to look at them. These are strong, grounded people and they have to get paid. The Democrats are keeping their paychecks and I think they’re probably going to relax a little bit now,” Trump said. In his speech, Trump reflected on the dangers associated with political leadership, suggesting that high-influence leaders are more likely to be targeted. “I studied assassinations,” he said. Trump added that “the most influential people … are the ones they go after,” citing figures such as Abraham Lincoln.“I’ve studied assassinations…the people who were most influential, the people who did the most – those are the people they go after,” he said. He added that being an “important president” comes with greater risks and highlighted the concerns expressed by his family following the incident. “They said to me, ‘Your job is dangerous,'” he shared.Authorities are continuing to examine the suspect’s writings, electronic devices and movements to determine the full scope of his intentions. Preliminary findings indicate that he may have targeted members of the government, possibly including the president.
