What happened to Tamela Yasmine Dix? Atlanta woman dies during trip to Puerto Rico

Tamirah Yasmeen Dix, a 40-year-old woman from Atlanta, Georgia, died Saturday night after an alleged incident at a popular adventure park in Puerto Rico.

Tamirah, 40, who was visiting Toro Verde Adventure Park in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, was reportedly hit in the face as she prepared to ride the zip line, according to an account her family provided to the Criminal Investigations Corps of Vega Baja, El Vocero reported. Baja Criminal Investigation Team provided testimony.

Even after the incident, Dix still completed the zip line and later met her family. Then they went out for lunch, but she said she didn’t want to eat. Soon after, she went to the bathroom and threw up.

As her condition began to deteriorate, her family decided to return to their hotel in Dorado. As they were driving on the PR-693 highway, her health suddenly deteriorated further. Her family called 911 and an ambulance met them on the road and took her to Orlando Health Physicians in Dorado, According to Elvocero.

Doctors tried to resuscitate her but were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead later that night.

Her body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Sciences in Rio Piedras, where an autopsy will be performed to find out the exact cause of her death.

What does the park say?

Torovede Adventure Park released a statement on Sunday following the incident. Park operations manager Emanuel Ortiz said an initial internal inspection during Dix’s visit did not reveal any injuries, impacts or issues.

“We will not make any further statements as this is an ongoing investigation, but we reiterate that we have strict security protocols and trained personnel to deal with any eventuality,” El Vocero quoted Ortiz as saying.

The park also said it would cooperate fully with authorities and reiterated its commitment to visitor safety and transparency.

Dix is ​​a graduate of Georgia Piedmont Technical College and was named the 2025 Student of the Year for her active participation in the cosmetology program.
