this Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) has released a detailed update on the ongoing search for a missing retired U.S. Air Force general, including a verified timeline and investigation progress William “Neal” McCasland.
Authorities said the 68-year-old man was last known to be at or near his residence in the area of Quail Run Court NE on the morning of February 27, 2026. The Silver Alert remains active and officials said the investigation into his disappearance continues.
According to BCSO, investigators identified several key events that occurred the day McCasland disappeared.
Around 10 a.m., a maintenance worker arrived at the residence and interacted with McCasland. Later, at about 11:10 a.m., McCasland’s wife, Mrs. McCasland Wilkerson, left the home to see a doctor.
When she returned around 12:04 p.m., McCasland was gone. His cell phone, prescription glasses and wearable devices were still inside the home, authorities said.

Mrs McCasland Wilkerson then tried to find him by contacting family and friends. After those efforts were unsuccessful, she reported him missing at around 3:07 p.m. and an investigation was immediately launched.
Investigators said several items appeared to be missing from the home. Officials believe McCasland may have been wearing a light green long-sleeved button-down outdoor shirt.
Authorities also said his hiking boots, wallet and a holstered .38-caliber revolver are believed to be missing.
During the investigation, officers discovered a gray U.S. Air Force sweatshirt on March 7 approximately 1.25 miles east of the residence. The item was collected and processed, and investigators said no blood was detected in preliminary testing, but further analysis is ongoing. Authorities noted that family or friends have not confirmed the sweatshirt is connected to McCasland, but it prompted additional targeted searches in the area.
BCSO said it remains the lead investigating agency and is coordinating with multiple partners, including FBIWhen specialized tools or technology are needed, contact the Albuquerque field office.
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety and New Mexico State Police Search and Rescue are coordinating search operations, with teams of volunteers assisting as requested.
Authorities said investigators have expanded the neighborhood to more than 700 homes, looking for security footage and information. Other search efforts include drone operations, helicopter support, ground searches and K-9 teams.
Officials said they have not found any confirmed sightings or videos showing McCasland leaving the area or indicating a direction of travel. While investigators say there is no evidence of foul play at this time, all leads are being examined.
