Former world number one Daniil Medvedev suffered a shocking on-court collapse at the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday as he was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Matteo Berrettini.Medvedev lost his temper midway through the second set, smashing his racquet seven times on clay before throwing the broken frame into a courtside trash can, a moment that quickly went viral. The outburst was met with sarcastic cheers from the crowd and he was found guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct and could have been fined a hefty fine. The 30-year-old Russian was feeling dizzy when the incident occurred. After losing his first serve in the second set and trailing 2-0, Medvedev slammed his racquet near the baseline and then swung it toward the back of the court. Still furious, he kept smashing it until it was completely destroyed.Watch: Medvedev breaks his racket seven times in a rowPerfect display from BerrettiniWhile Medvedev struggled, Berrettini put in one of the best performances of his career. The Italian, currently ranked 90th and holding a wild card, dominated from start to finish in a one-sided match that lasted just 49 minutes.“I didn’t expect to win like this and it doesn’t happen very often,” Berrettini said afterwards.Statistics highlight the disparity between the two players. Medvedev had 5 double faults, shot only 36% on his first serve, and scored only 17 points out of 67 points. By comparison, Berrettini was nearly flawless, missing only a handful of shots throughout the game.rare ‘double bagel‘ShockedAccording to Opta, Berrettini became only the fifth player since the ATP rankings began in 1973 to defeat a top-10 opponent 6-0, 6-0 – a rare scoreline dubbed the “double bagel”. The last such instance occurred a decade ago, when David Goffin defeated Tomas Berdych. The result marked a dramatic reversal in their rivalry, with Medvedev winning all three of their previous matches.Coming into the tournament, Medvedev has shown solid form on hard courts, including a recent run to the finals in Indian Wells where he defeated world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz. But his first clay-court trip of the season turned into a nightmare.
