WATCH: 7-month-old baby in stroller killed in New York shooting; Mamdani says ‘can’t accept this as normal’

A 7-month-old baby girl was killed by a stray bullet in Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon, sparking outrage and sadness after chilling surveillance footage captured the moment her mother realized the tragedy. The baby, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was sitting in a stroller with her parents near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore streets in Williamsburg when shots rang out around 1:15 p.m., police said.Family members said the baby had just started saying “mom” and had not yet started walking. The incident has reignited concerns about gun violence in New York City, with officials vowing to renew efforts to address the issue.Authorities said a group of people gathered outside a deli when two suspects approached the area on motorcycles. The passenger allegedly fired his weapon before the pair fled the scene.According to investigators, the suspect walked the wrong way down the street as he approached the crowd. The gunman fired multiple shots, one of which hit the baby in the head.Surveillance video from a nearby pub showed the tragic aftermath. The child’s mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, didn’t initially know what was happening. She was caring for her 2-year-old son when she looked into the stroller and saw her daughter was bleeding.Witnesses described scenes of panic and chaos. Some initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before realizing the seriousness of the situation. One resident said he saw the baby lying on the ground and the mother screaming in pain. Another witness said she initially thought the sounds were firecrackers before feeling debris hit her leg.The baby’s father took her to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 1:46 p.m. Her brother suffered minor scratches and was treated.

What do NYPD cops say?

The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle but crashed into an oncoming vehicle two blocks away, police said. The passenger was thrown from the bike and taken to hospital, where he was later identified as a suspect and taken into custody in connection with a separate domestic incident. As of Wednesday evening, he had not been formally charged in the shooting.Authorities have launched a manhunt for a second suspect who was driving a motorcycle.Police Chief Jessica S. Tish said the investigation is ongoing and officials are working to determine a motive and intended target.

What Zoran Mamdani said

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the incident a “devastating reminder” that work still needs to be done to combat gun violence.“We cannot accept that this is normal in our city,” he said. “We cannot be insensitive to this pain.”He added: “A life that was barely beginning was taken away in an instant. No words can make up for the heartbreak this family is feeling right now.”
