Mali’s security crisis further escalated on Saturday when Defense Minister Sadio Camara was attacked and killed at his residence in Kati, France Internationale reported. The killings come amid a series of coordinated attacks by separatist and al-Qaeda-linked militants targeting the capital, Bamako, and several other cities across the country. The violence marks one of the most serious security escalations in recent years, with separatist groups in the north confirming they have joined forces with Islamist militants in coordinated attacks on Malian army positions. The attack injured at least 16 people, including civilians and soldiers. Initially, the al-Qaeda-linked Jamaat-e-Islami Nusrat Muslim (JNIM) claimed responsibility for the attack, but later confirmed it was carried out jointly with the Tuareg-led separatist group the Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA). Earlier on Saturday, shootings and bombings occurred near Bamako’s Modibo Keita International Airport and the Kati military base, one of the main defense installations outside the country’s capital. Similar attacks were reported in the central and northern cities of Sevare, Kidal and Gao.ALSO READ | WATCH: Gunfire blasts Mali’s capital and other cities; defense minister’s home targeted – what we know so farWitnesses said there was heavy gunfire, explosions and the deployment of military helicopters as security forces moved in. Fighting continues, with roads blocked and residents urged to stay indoors. Bamako subsequently imposed a three-day curfew from 9pm to 6am.United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack. A statement issued by a UN spokesperson said: “The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of attacks in multiple locations in Mali. He strongly condemned these acts of violence, expressed solidarity with the Malian people and stressed the need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.
In a major development, FLA spokesman Mohamed El Maouloud Ramadan confirmed that separatist militants were involved in the attack along with JNIM, the Associated Press reported.“This operation was carried out in cooperation with JNIM, which is also committed to protecting the population from the military regime in Bamako,” he said in a statement. The separatists also claimed control of parts of Mali’s two main cities of Kidal and Gao, marking a renewed push for influence in the region where they have long sought to establish an independent state called Azawad.
The Malian government said the attack injured 16 people, including civilians and military personnel. Several militants were killed, but officials did not provide an exact number of attackers who were put down.State television confirmed that the Malian army was “working to neutralize the attackers” while authorities imposed emergency restrictions to stabilize the capital. The governor of Bamako region announced a strict curfew and deployed security forces in sensitive locations such as the airport area and military installations.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the coordinated attacks and called for greater regional cooperation to deal with escalating armed violence in the Sahel.Security analysts say the coordination between jihadist groups and separatists marks a worrying shift that could complicate already fragile counterinsurgency efforts in Mali and its neighbors. The separatist group also issued a statement urging Russia to reconsider its support for Mali’s military junta, claiming that foreign support has worsened conditions for civilians.Mali’s military junta, which came to power through coups in 2020 and 2021, has become increasingly dependent on Russian security assistance after reducing cooperation with Western partners. However, the security situation continues to deteriorate, armed attacks continue to increase, and conflicts occur frequently across the country. The attacks come amid a broader surge in violence in the Sahel, where Islamist insurgencies and separatist movements are expanding despite years of military operations and international support.
