New Delhi: Ireland T20 cricket Team prepares for leadership change, veteran batsmen Paul Sterling Decided to resign as T20I captain. The move is part of the team’s larger plan to prepare for the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Although Sterling will no longer lead the shortest format, he will continue to serve as ODI captain and remain an important player in the T20 team.Ireland’s recent performance at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has not been as expected. The team finished fourth in the group with just one win but no results and two losses.
Sterling’s own campaign was cut short, playing just two games, after he injured knee ligaments against the Australian national cricket team. With Sterling out, wicketkeeper-batsman Lorcan Tucker took over as captain for the remainder of the match. This experience highlighted the need to establish a new leadership group for the future.
Despite Sterling’s imminent resignation, he has made it clear how much leading Ireland means to him. He said: “It is a huge privilege to lead Ireland in this format and I am very proud of it.” He added: “Captaining the national team is a privilege but also carries with it a huge responsibility and I am extremely grateful for the trust and support I have received in this role.”He also thanked everyone around the squad, saying: “I would like to thank my team-mates, the coaching staff, everyone involved in Irish cricket for their continued support, and the fans who have supported us throughout.”Ireland will now name a new T20I captain as they begin preparations for the next World Cup.
