‘Very grateful’: Sterling resigns as T20 captain after poor World Cup performance

Sterling’s own campaign was cut short, playing just two games, after he injured knee ligaments against the Australian national cricket team.With Sterling out, wicketkeeper-batsman Lorcan Tucker took over as captain for the remainder of the match. This experience highlighted the need to establish a new leadership group for the future.

Sterling’s message and next steps

Despite Sterling’s imminent resignation, he has made it clear how much leading Ireland means to him. He said: “It is a huge privilege to lead Ireland in this format and I am very proud of it.” He added: “Captaining the national team is a privilege but also carries with it a huge responsibility and I am extremely grateful for the trust and support I have received in this role.”He also thanked everyone around the squad, saying: “I would like to thank my team-mates, the coaching staff, everyone involved in Irish cricket for their continued support, and the fans who have supported us throughout.”Ireland will now name a new T20I captain as they begin preparations for the next World Cup.
