Sheridan Gorman, 18, a Venezuelan immigrant identified as Jose Medina-Medina, was shot and killed while taking a nighttime walk to see the Northern Lights. The 25-year-old suspect’s name has not been released in advance because he has not yet been charged. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Sunday that ICE has arrested a detainer asking “sanctuary politicians” not to release Jose Medina-Medina, a Venezuelan illegal immigrant convicted of killing 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman in Chicago, Illinois.According to local reports, 18-year-old Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman was shot to death while walking in a park with friends around 1:00 a.m. Thursday. Medina-Medina is accused of approaching her while wearing a mask and holding a gun. When she tried to escape, he shot her. Gorman was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.Medina-Medina was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, and released back to the United States under the Biden administration, the Department of Homeland Security said. He was subsequently arrested for shoplifting in Chicago, Illinois, and was released again on June 19, 2023.“Sheridan Gorman’s entire life was on the line before this cold-blooded killer decided to end her life. She was failed by open border policies and asylum politicians who twice released this illegal immigrant before he went on to commit this heinous murder,” said Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Biss. “We call on Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this illegal immigrant criminal from prison back into the American community.“Sheridan was a cheerleader in every sense of the word. She had a way of making people feel seen, valued and trusted,” her family wrote in an online obituary for the teen. The obituary added: “She radiated something greater – a rare, unmistakable warmth, a vibrant, compassionate and vibrant spirit. She was funny, kind, loving and had a heart that made room for everyone.”
