US strikes Isfahan: Why it’s vital to Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure

The U.S. attack on Isfahan has reportedly brought renewed attention to one of Iran’s most sensitive strategic centers. Although Iran did not specify the extent of the damage, media reports said the U.S. military used a 2,000-pound bunker bomb to attack a large ammunition depot in Isfahan.Donald Trump shared a video on social media showing flames engulfing the Iranian facility in Isfahan. Iranian media reported that preliminary investigation results showed that the attacks in the central region of the country targeted certain “military locations”, but did not disclose the specific locations.Fars news agency quoted Akbar Salehi, a security official at the governor’s office in Isfahan, as saying that initial assessments indicated that some military installations in the province had been attacked. He added that details on the scale of damage and casualties were not immediately available.

Why Isfahan is important

Isfahan, long known for its cultural heritage, has become a central node in Iran’s defense and nuclear infrastructure, especially as the United States and Israel continue to target key structures. The province has important military and industrial facilities. The province hosts a range of critical facilities related to nuclear research, manufacturing and defense production, making it central to Iran’s long-term security and technological capabilities.Central to its importance is its role in Iran’s nuclear program. According to an International Atomic Energy Agency report earlier this year, the uranium stored at the Isfahan facility is 60 percent pure, just below weapons-grade levels. Experts say such material could be further refined relatively quickly, putting the site at the center of international scrutiny of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.Isfahan’s infrastructure combines above-ground and underground elements. While much of the industrial complex is spread over open terrain and can be seen via satellite imagery, more sensitive materials are believed to be stored in a network of reinforced tunnels built under nearby mountains. This dual structure reflects an effort to balance the scale of operations with the protection of critical assets. The underground tunnel complex features multiple entry points and is designed to protect high-value materials from external threats and surveillance. However, the exact layout and internal conditions of these facilities remain largely unknown, adding to the uncertainty about the site’s resiliency and capacity. In addition to its nuclear activities, Isfahan contributes to Iran’s broader defense manufacturing ecosystem, enhancing its strategic influence. Any damage to facilities in the region would not only affect Iran’s nuclear program but also its military supply chain. The attack on Isfahan underscores the intensity of the month-long conflict between the United States and Israel and Iran that has spread to the wider Gulf region. Iran’s continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global energy flows, has effectively disrupted shipping, sharply pushed up oil prices and roiled international markets.
